FOC is looking for an intern with a good level of 3D CAD skills. The person that we are looking for should be a good team player, but also someone with a strong personality. Someone who has his/her own ideas and who can stand out from the crowd. We are a small company and like to do great things, so the person we are looking for should be independent and show the initiative to pick up things that need to be done. Knowledge of Rapid Manufacturing techniques (such as Laser Sintering) is an advantage. We are especially interested in people, who would consider a career with FOC after their study.

At FOC we believe that people should be rewarded for what they deliver. If you have good ideas and good designs we will certainly consider making your designs part of our design collection.

Software skills

All of our designs are digitally manufactured and in order for you to be selected for an internship, you already have to have a good knowledge of some (or equivalent) of the following 3D software packages:

3D Studio Max

Rhino 3D

Solidworks

Period of Internship

3-6 Months with a trial period of 1 month.

40 hours per week.

Financial Compensation

300 Euro / month

Language

Fluent speaking and writing in English.

Your expected daily schedule

Even though designing products takes a lot of our time, there is much more to it. We expect you to be involved in the entire production chain from making renderings, 3D models, updating our website or catalogue, making package designs, stand designs or even doing assemblies for new design prototypes.

Internship summary
Description: Design a new range of packaging for the FOC Collection products

Period:  January 2010 until March/April 2010, present at least 2 days per week at the company office in Amsterdam

Compensation: not financial, but a great experience amongst many young and international designers. Every day we have lunch together, paid by FOC

Requirements: At least in the third year of your studies and speak English fluently

Assignment
The FOC Collection consists of interior products and accessories. Main product category is ‘lighting’. The lights are distributed worldwide, which means that they are shipped all over the world by our courier. Although we already have packaging (brown cardboard boxes), there are two reasons why it needs to be redesigned:

1. Better Protection: Many lights arrive damaged at the customer (around 10%), so the current packaging does not provide sufficient protection
2. Better Positioning: Our lights are aimed at the higher end of the market, but the current packaging gives a cheap impression. We also feel that the packaging could be a great way to communicate the unique aspects of our products (3D Printed, produced at sheltered workshop, stunning light effects)

The result at the end of the internship should be:

• Technical drawings of the packaging, in all the required sizes
• Graphic designs for the packaging
• If applicable, 3D files for any 3D Printed details

Intern profile
FOC is looking for an industrial design student, preferably also with graphic skills, who has fresh ideas for a range of packaging that fulfills the three requirements mentioned earlier and can be realized within limited budget.
