Pinup is a sexy and classy female style, inspired by the iconic imagery of mid-20th century models that men “pinned-up” their wall. In this assignment FOC Talents are challenged to design the dream product for Pinups (deadline: September 1st).

We will collaborate with media partner “The Pin Up Magazine” in order to get valuable insights into Pinup wishes and to select and promote the most desirable designs:

Inspire (July + August): The Pin Up Magazine will ask their 30K+ Facebook followers to share what would be their dream product. This can serve as inspiration when creating your product designs

Select (September): Through a Facebook poll Pinup followers can select which of your submitted designs they would like to see commercialized. FOC will do a preselection and checks if each design meets the brief

Promote (From December): Selected designs will be sold through the FOC distribution channels and will feature in an extensive marketing campaign, including multiple full page print ads in the Pin Up Magazine combined with an online blast

Deliverables
There are no product category limitations, it is key that the designs appeals to the Pinup target group. Before September 1st 2012, designers that are part of the FOC Talents program can e-mail to talents@freedomofcreation.com:

• The 3D-file of their design(s) in STL format
• 2 renderings of the design in Jpeg format
• A short description explaining the idea behind the design

Up till mid August you can consult the FOC designers and have them comment on your concepts.

Prizes
• 1st prize: the winner will receive 250,- euro in prize money
• 1st & Runners up: the selected entries will be commercialized and these Talents will receive 5% royalties and a free 3D printed copy of their design

Technical requirements
• Design should be producible in either:
a. (Dyed) Laser Sintered Nylon
b. Zcorp multi-color material. Zcorp prints are more brittle than Nylon and have a rougher feel. Also you need to apply texture maps to the 3D model, so make sure you first read up on the design rules here and here
• Product should fit within a 20 x 15 x 10 cm bounding box.
• The Nylon and multi-color price are roughly similar. The part price is partly based on the bounding box and partly on the sintered material volume

Design lovers from all around the world came to see the numerous new items that were shown including the new ‘Lightnest’, designed by Frederik Roijé. We want to thank everyone who came to visit us. Below an impression of the exhibition and the new Lightnest:

Lightnest” comes from the “lampshades nesting together into the wall,” explains the designer Frederik Roijé. The design is totally inspired by the beauty of nature and its unique shapes. The wall lamp shape brings to mind a group of soft mushrooms spreading light that gently illuminate every space in an exceptional way. The technique of 3D printing, which allows designers to create shapes impossible to be thought, has made possible the realization of details never seen before, such as small pleats reminiscent of the hyphae of mushrooms. Fluid and welcoming, Lightnest is a celebration of the nature elements: it attracts for the evocative design and for the warm atmosphere that it creates.

We don’t just seek for creative minds, but rare talents who can take any product or project from A to Z within days. Our designers need to have a skill-set with a combination of being a 3D CAD specialist, full blown engineer, 3D printing expert, but above all fun to hang-around with.

Alan Nguyen possessed all these skills and much more, so we decided to buy him a computer, clear a bit of desk and let him go crazy. During his few months stay at Freedom Of Creation, Alan has already successfully finished several products and worked for a number of prestigious clients of ours. We welcome Alan on board!

Janne Kyttanen, founder of Freedom Of Creation, is starring in the 48 hour kick-off of the Heineken Innovation Challenge, April 3-5, 2012. The Challenge, worth $10,000 USD to the winner, invites people from all over the world to share their ideas on the future of sustainable beverage packaging and distribution.

The Heineken Innovation Challenge is the first to crowd source globally for sustainable beverage packaging concepts. Janne, an expert in 3D design, was selected to spend 48 hours in an undisclosed location, with just a web cam, laptop, and 3D printers like the Cube. Janne will demonstrate the entire ideation-to-production process through access to Cubify.com, 3D printers and tweets, Facebook posts and emails from observers on www.ideasbrewery.com

The Heineken Innovation Challenge entries will be submitted to internal sustainability experts for judging according to set criteria: innovation, feasibility and the most votes received at www.ideasbrewery.com. Selected designers will be invited to collaborate with Heineken to enhance and perfect their ideas. At the conclusion of the Innovation Challenge, an Official Jury of external experts and Heineken management will select one overall winner, who will be notified in June 2012.

The FOC Talents Challenge 2011 summer edition, in cooperation with Ross Lovegrove, was awarded to designers who interpreted Lovegrove’s vision of organic essentialism. The jury panel of the contest, composed by Ross Lovegrove, Janne Kyttanen and Brian Garret, were unanimous in their decision: Louis Filosa won the design competition with his Cobble necklace design.

Lovegrove commented about the winning design: “I find erosion a fantastic provider of form and it could be a metaphor for infinite form. What I also like about this work is the contained object which has an almost tribal quality and something more contemporary in the way it is worn…I like its strength and wearability almost as if emotions can crawl inside and live there…ritualistic.”

The Cobble necklace is a precious collectible, visually intriguing as a complex piece of jewellery or as a beautiful, organic, and self-contained object. The Cobble necklace is now for sale in red or grey sparkle color.

Second place was awarded to the Park necklace design by Pekka Salokannel. Pekka sees a park as a place to relax, have fun and celebrate. The design is inspired by the concept of parks incorporating two separate and distinct styles (man-made and natural scenery) to express their intrinsic beauty. The double faced necklace also has two distinctly unique sides that allow the wearer to express a different mood for different occasions. “It’s all about your mood at the moment – which side you love the most” explains Pekka. The Park necklace is now available in the FOC online store.

Freedom Of Creation has developed a custom version of the Palm Chandelier on request of the Staffan Tollgard Design Group. The prestigious interior design studio has commissioned this impressive chandelier to illuminate the spacious rooms of a London private house. Decorated stucco ceilings are perfectly harmonized with the near uncountable, delicate petals of Palm Chandelier, in a brilliant stylistic choice.

Equipped with 91 Palm shades and 5 Watt halogen bulbs, the chandelier is a real eye-catcher and is designed to light up large interior spaces. Light floods through and around every petal. Each shade, produced in polyamide with the latest 3D printing technology, recalls the beauty of nature’s foliage, and diffuses soft filtered light contributing to the exclusive atmosphere of the house. The metal frame has a special gunmetal finish. The Palm Chandelier outside diameter is 160 cm.

The bespoke Chandelier has a special gunmetal finish. Prices and technical details are available on request by sending an e-mail to bram@freedomofcreation.com

Furthermore the standard size Palm Chandelier was ordered for a smaller room. It has a diameter of 100 cm and comes with 37 halogen bulbs of each 10 Watt:
