Freedom Of Creation (FOC) is where cutting edge technology meets design. FOC is a pioneering design and research company, specialized in designing with 3D printing technologies. The outcome of this work is either part of the FOC Collection or commercialized by other design labels. Since 2000, the extensive research conducted by FOC in design with 3D printing, has resulted in innovative and successful commercial products, the development of new industrial materials and even software products, and has been the foundation for significant R&D projects with a range of industrial partners. Our products have been published and exhibited around the world and have been awarded numerous design awards.
Vision
Product lifespan decreases, while the amount of new products pushed to the market is ever increasing. This is not a functional global vision for the future. Most of these products are tailored for the unidentified masses, which due to this fast “push to market” approach, will only decrease the design quality and increase waste on our planet. And most of these consumer products are still produced via an old fashioned (a century) mass production infrastructure, which equals to large stock, high manual labor, big investments, long distance transportation, army of employees etc.
Since the world is becoming ever more digital, decentralized and connected, this approach on how to develop products will change the world forever. Whereas MP3 changed the music industry for ever, digital cameras did the same for photography and digital print enabled everybody to become a publisher, the same transition will happen for consumer products as well and people will be able to create their own products with great ease and will not need to be bound by the selection they can find from retail.
We also feel this approach can have a tremendous effect on carbon emissions on global scale. You will only produce what you need, there is hardly any transportation and all the stock you have is virtual.
History
The Freedom Of Creation (FOC) concept is based on a graduation project executed by Janne Kyttänen at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam 1999-2000. This project looked into the possibilities of using 3D printing technology and Augmented Reality as viable technologies when changing production and distribution logistics on global scale. After the graduation exhibition, Freedom Of Creation, was established in Helsinki, Finland 2000. Freedom Of Creation in Amsterdam was established 2006.

First Laser Sintered light shade by Janne Kyttanen 2000

First Augmented Reality video by Janne Kyttanen 2000. This project looked into the possibilities of people being able to upload virtual information into their living rooms and they could then interact with the designs, change certain features in them and when finished, the products could be produced by 3D printing.
Divisions
FOC Collection
the award winning design collection
FOC Collection is a range of Interior products and Accessories, which FOC commercializes through its global distribution partners. Our exclusive designs are trendsetters in the new era of digitally generated consumer products. read on
These products are much more than stunning beauties. They are also models for localized manufacturing and distribution logistics where no stock, no assembly, minimal transportation, environmentally friendliness and just-in-time production are the future goals. All of our designs use the latest manufacturing techniques, which enable the direct manufacturing of products via 3D Software and they push the envelope of innovation to its limits.

FOC FOR
innovative projects for international clients
FOC for is our product development division for third party clients. All our clients come to us because of our special design expertise. read on
It is not just the stunning design and manufacturing expertise we have, but also because of the environmental aspects of our entire company concept. So far we have worked in several fronts of design such as packaging, furniture, jewelry, fashion, textiles and lighting design. Our clients include companies such as Philips, LVMH, Hyundai, Asics, Nokia, Nike, L’Oreal and Heineken.
This is how we do it…

FOC Talents
where young talented designers take over
FOC Talents will be launched 1.1.2010. It is an online global network of talented, young and pre-selected designers, who are given every 3 months a new design theme, related to a different niche lifestyle target group. read on
FOC Producer
a global 3D printing platform for combined production
All FOC products and projects are produced by various 3D printing technologies and FOC already produces several tons annually. 3D printing has the image of being an expensive technology, but as with any new technology, things always tend to be more expensive than with their predecessors, until the market becomes transparant. read on
FOC producer will be started 1 November, 2009 and will share our production service and logistics with everybody. We will simply combine the capacity and pricing models from the biggest 3D printing companies in Europe and launch that into a combined online portal.
Since at the moment most available machine capacity in the world is not used, clever sourcing of production can achieve great cost-savings for everybody. By comparing different manufacturers online, you are guaranteed the best producer and price for each part. Since all our parts are build together with several clients at the same time, we can further diminish the costs for everybody. By allowing just a couple of days longer lead times, our pricing can be as much as 10 times cheaper than what you normally would pay for similar parts.
FOC Imagineering
service for technical designs
FOC Imagineering goes beyond design beauty and looks into the beauty of engineering, mathematics and virtual simulation and researches the potential what these new 3D production technologies can enable engineers, architects, constructors and doctors to do. read on
